Among characteristics indicating these websites were reliable were:

nhlbi.nih.gov (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute) and cdc.gov are both government websites sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Mayo.org is a commercial website, but among the 21 references listed in its article of cholesterol were the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the CDC and the American Heart Assn.

WebMD lists its staff of 4 doctors who approve the content posted, lists its Medical Ethics Board and has accreditation from URAC which is an independent non-profit review organization which issues a seal of quality for websites whose information is deemed "credible, been closely reviewed and has met the highest standards for information delivery"
